~ Tips for Poets ~

"I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain

II. What´s in a Poem?

2. Style: The Tools of the Trade

Kennings are also an Important device used in the writting of heathen poetry. Some modern examples of kennings would be 'riding the waves' and 'hail of bullets'. Some tradition examples that we would find in the Eddas would be 'nag of the sea' or 'wave steed'to describe a boat.
Kennings are of course great aids in writting poetry when it comes to alliteration, assonance and rhyming. They also add an esoteric feel in that if you do not know the kennings meaning the poem is enigmatic or incomprehensible to those who are not initiated into heathen lore.
