My Gods Are Rougher

My gods are rougher than Cavafy’s
more brutish less refined
less groomed less suited to marble
My gods must be photographed -
not carved in rigid stone -
or touched in the flesh
uncaptured and pure
in their fluid virility
My gods can go
days without shaving
and love to stroll down the
street in jackboots and jeans
They never wear laurel
these days preferring
the anonymity of a knit cap
to tame their divine dreds
