The Necken

The Necken, he plays among the blue waves,
Is lovely to hear afterward!
Small rivers in the ring dance move,
And the stars twinkle as well.
But the Necken, when he looks to the sky,
He casts his eye down;
For, among the stars who shine there,
Freya does not smile at him.

Greater than jordlifvets sorrow is his -
The bride that he searched he´d not found.
Go out, stars, and hide your glory!
Bridesmaids! Go not to dance!
The Necken, with harp, for mountain and valley
Sings about love´s sorrow,
Hiding since the green hall,
Ends so elf-king bale.

Original: Necken.

Necken, han spelar på böljan den blå,
Ljuft är att höra derpå!
Hafvets små elfvor i ringdans gå,
Och stjernorna tindra också.
Men Necken, när han emot himlen ser,
Slår han sitt öga ner;
Ty bland de stjernor, som tindra der,
Freja ej mot honom ler.

Större än jordlifvets sorg är hans —
Bruden, han sökte, ej fans.
Slocknen, i stjernor, och döljen er glans!
I tärnor! Gån icke till dans!
Necken, vid harpan, för berg och dal
Sjunger om kärleksqval,
Gömmer sig sedan i grönan sal,
Slutar så elfkungens bal.
