~ Poetry by me ~
The Guest
Tune: your choice
I heard a tune whistled outside my door,
which IŽd locked with good reason, to keep strangers out.
I donŽt know how came it burst suddenly open,
the wind blew right in with a furious gust.
A tall man was standing there, gaunt and foreboding,
I wanted to run yet to cower in fear;
but something about him seemed all too familiar,
the dogs didnŽt bark, then I knew it was him.
I gave him such welcome a miser could muster,
for long it had been I last entertained guests.
He seemed not to notice, and told of his travels
till in the small hours I nodded to sleep.
I woke in the morning to find he was gone,
cold ash in the hearth and no trace that he left,
except for the ache in a heart filled with longing,
the memory of tales to confirm heŽd been there.
Half sighing, half smiling I turned to my tasks then,
while outside the northwind was whistling a tune.
My door stays unlocked now, and guests are most welcome;
I somehow feel sure I shall see him again.
