Ordeal
I thought that I was bold.
I though my courage would always hold strong and true.
Then I met You at the crossroads,
in a forest that stank of death.
For the first time, the call of Your voice filled me with terror
for the first time, Your kiss stole breath from me
froze the essence of me, chilled the living flame
that had so often before delighted in Your presence.
I saw then, what Your warriors see.
I tasted their fear, the abject terror that only You possess the ability to
evoke.
You, my fierce and frightening God, have brought me to my knees
as no other ever could.
I entered that forest Your bride and left it a corpse.
I entered that forest a woman and left it a valkyrie – at least for a time;
for You put the blade in my hand and summoned me forth in that darkness
to bring into Your arms a son. The first of many, I am sure.
I left myself in those woods, shrouded in the icy darkness
of that dead and dying place.
It will be a long time before I find myself once more…
though still Your fire burns.
