Bringer of Gifts

Hail to the mischievous Lie-smith
who helped Thor win back Mjollnir,
who replaced Sif’s hair with wrought gold,
who brought great treasures to the Aesir
and gave his own self as Sigyn’s husband;
hail to you, O mother of Sleipnir,
who won the walls of Asgard for nothing,
who stayed Freyja’s unwanted leaving,
who birthed the eight-legged foal,
and was given both praise and blame.

Hail to the Bringer of Gifts (and Grifts)
who feeds the whirlwind’s chaotic heart,
who throws open door after door,
who turns the hourglass again and again
and lights the lost traveler’s way home;
hail to you, O Lord of the Unexpected,
god of sweet surprises and sudden shocks,
who brings us fortune or misfortune,
unseen serendipity or just desserts,
depending on the angle of the looking-glass.
