We Are Our Deeds

A good doctor saves a dying old man.
A young addict ODs from the needle.
A strong man dares to defend the feeble.
A husband beats his wife because he can.

A father holds his newborn son with pride.
Another leaves his family behind.
A poor child accepts the food he can find.
A rich child throws his fine cuisine aside.

Families with a house whine of taxes.
A homeless man sleeps amid piles of trash.
A lottery-winner wins fists of cash.
An honest worker’s wage never waxes.

From good circumstances, or else their prey,
We’re all responsible for our own lives.
The unyielding earns that for which he strives.
All must play the hand they were dealt today.

Sometimes we must reconsider our needs.
Our acts echo in time; we are our deeds.
