How and Why?

"How many grains of sand are on a beach?"
"How many stars illuminate the sky?"
No answers from the Powers I beseech;
They don't respond, not even with a lie.

"How many snowflakes are on a mountain?"
"How many people have fallen from wars?"
"How much water hits the ground from the rain?"
"How many pleading people are ignored?"

"How many nations have risen and fallen?"
"How can we be happier, not sadder?"
The Gods, I ween, know for what They're culling;
But then again, what does it all matter?
