~ Non-Norse Poetry by Others ~

Be yourself

From birth, we’re told that we’re special
And can earn all that is wanted.
In school, we are only taunted;
Our egos we have to wrestle.

From youth, we’re medicated
With all the latest prescriptions.
With contradictory dictions,
“Drugs should be only berated.”

We’re told that in which to believe
Through chosen morals, we’re made slaves
And told of “only One who saves”
Who tells us what’s right to achieve.

We’re told that violence is wrong,
While TV glorifies murder.
The prime-time zombies drift further
From gaining that for which they long.

We’re taught to love celebrities
And recognize all their faces,
Treat them like they’re the Three Graces,
And do all that their sponsors please.

Advertising sells us their sex
And exploits insecurities,
Displaying our common envies
To clear shelves of useless objects.

We’re told we must die in service
Of a cause we can’t fully grasp
Against those who want to hurt us,
And for those whose power they clasp.

We’re told we have freedom of speech,
But we shouldn’t say certain words,
Or speak against the set standards,
Or ask for what is out of reach.

I say, “Stop! Change words to actions,
Frustration into clarity,
Selfishness into charity;
Leave your woes! Create Reactions!"
