Tips for Poets ~
Norse
Alliterative Poetry Workshop
Ljóđaháttr
- is an alliterative Old Norse verse meter.
- can be translated as "Song Meter".
1) The poem may have any number of stanzas.
2) Each stanza has four lines.
3) Line 1 and 3 follow exactly the same rules as fornyrdhislag.
4) Lines 2 and 4 have three stresses.
(There are no "half-lines" here, and no "breaks".)
Two or all three of the stresses alliterate, no matter which ones.
The resulting *rhythm* (4 - 3 - 4 - 3 stresses per line) is exactly that of a
ballad (English folk ballads etc.)
