Norse Alliterative Poetry Workshop

Does it alliterate? - Test 3 (vowels)

Yggdrasil is the name of the World Tree. The stress is on the first syllable. You want to use "Yggdrasil" in a poem as an alliterating word.

Now, which of the following words does "Yggdrasil" alliterate with?

1. ash
2. year
3. Ymir (a giant, pronounced EE-mir)
4. unknown
5. useful

Only one of the following answers is right.

Answer A: It alliterates with 2 and 3 - only with words that start with the same letter, "y".

Answer B: It alliterates with 1, 3, 4 and 5, since all of them start with vowels.

Answer C: It alliterates with 1, 3, and 4 - only these are spoken as vowels, while 2 and 5 are spoken as consonants.
